On May 14, 2018, a graduating senior at Marshall High School, Marshall, Illinois, was presented with the Lowney Turner Handy Writing Award and additionally received the first cash scholarship attached to the award.
Although the Award has been presented over a number of years, recipients now also receive a $500 scholarship as a result of a donation by Jon Shirota, the Handy Writers Colony’s last member. Shirota has pledged $5,000 to fund the scholarship for the next ten years.
Lowney’s nephew, Dr. James Turner, presented the award to Garrett Frank. Frank will be attending the University of Illinois and plans to study geology.
