The Lowney Handy Award and Scholarship in Creative Writing was presented this year to Megann Kellum. Marshall High School (Marshall, Illinois) English teacher Amy Gard reviewed more than half a dozen essay applications for the award which includes a $500 scholarship established by Jon Shirota. The award honors Lowney Handy who, along with her husband, Harry Handy, and writer James Jones, founded the Handy Colony in Marshall, Illinois. Shirota was a Colony member. Lowney’s nephew, Dr. James Turner, presented the scholarship.
Good to know that the scholarship is going forward.
